IT was soggy sandwiches all round as the heavens opened on The Big Victorian Picnic in Leamington’s Pump Room Gardens.
The celebration to mark the recent completion of the historic gardens and bandstand had to be postponed in June due to a great British summer downpour.
And with sizzling temperatures and nothing but sunshine in the days running up to the rescheduled event on Saturday, organisers must have been thinking everything was all set to go swimmingly – but not in a wet through way.
But there were still some hardy picnickers who donned their best Victorian outfits to make the most of the day and enjoy live music, 19th century-fete style activities such as hoola-hoops and parlour games, and themed stalls.
A council spokesman said: “The disappointing weather did not stop the local community enjoying Saturday’s Big Victorian Picnic, in particular the free children’s activities, dog show, food and drink and live music from the bandstand including Leamington’s answer to Ed Sheeran, Joe Dolmon.
“Given the level of interest for this event on social media, we very much hope it will be back in the Pump Room Gardens next year. Our thanks go to our stallholders and entertainers and everyone who has supported us.”
