Solar farm plans in pipeline for Southam

Leamington Editorial 9th Apr, 2015 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

PLANS are in the pipeline for a solar farm on the doorstep of a south Warwickshire town.

TGC Renewables Ltd wants permission to build on land at Fields Farm on Station Road in Southam.

Roughly the size of 22 football pitches, they say the 40 acre site – made up of 27,480 solar panels – would generate enough energy annually to power over 1,800 homes.

Stratford District Council has already launched a consultation into the proposals and subject to feedback, the application is likely to be considered in the coming months.

It comes shortly after plans to build a solar farm roughly the size of 16 football pitches in Claverdon were refused.

Developers Berty 003 had claimed the 7.5MW site at Park Farm on Church Road would provide renewable energy to around 1,300 homes each year, and be mostly screened from view.

But the proposals divided villagers with some arguing the farm – made up of around 29,000 panels – on green-belt land would be a massive eyesore.

And having carried out a site visit, members of the planning committee followed officers’ recommendations and rejected the application at the end of March.

Residents have until April 17 to comment on the Southam application at the district council’s website.
