Strings start off the year for Leamington Music

STRINGS are very much in evidence as Leamington Music returns to the concert stage for the first time in the new year.

The Monteverdi String Band plays in Warwick On Tuesday January 25 and the The Consome String Quartet in Leamington on Friday January 28.

In the Early Music in St Mary’s Church Warwick monthly series, The Monteverdi String Band performs in the town for the first time.

Joining director Oliver Webber in the programme Meraviglia e diletto are Theresa Caudle violin, Wendi Kelly viola, Christopher Suckling bass violin and Toby Carr theorbo.

In the programme, which translates into English as Wonder and Delight, there aresome 20 works by composers who flourished during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Venice and the Veneto region.

Monteverdi – the most famous of them all – would have known many of them, names like Gabrieli, Castello, Scarani, Rovetta, Salvaverde, Virgiliano, Mortaro, Piccinini, Marini, Cazzati, Rosenmüller and Legrenzi.

The Consome String Quartet – who as BBC New Generation Artists have been regularly featured on Radio 3 – will perform in the Royal Pump Rooms.

The quartet’s programme starts with Haydn’s Quartet Op 71 No 2 before being joined by the outstanding young cellist Alexander Rolton to play two Quintets written in consecutive years in the late 1820s by Onslow and Schubert.
