The Edge lookalike buckles up for banger challenge with his brothers from Warwick

DOUBLE takes were in order when a lookalike U2 band member from Warwick buckled up for a charity banger challenge.

Steve Richards – also known as The Edge in the world’s most convincing U2 tribute band ‘Bono and the edge’ – set off on the Saint Tropez or Bust Banger Rally Challenge on Saturday (September 23) alongside his two brothers also from the town.

His brothers Dave and Jim just happen to be part of Team U3 55 – Le Mans so will bring the expertise to the trip, while Steve will presumably will bring the music.

The challenge will see the trio race through eight countries in seven days in a car worth less than £1,000, to raise funds for WaterAid.

Across the world, 771 million people are living without clean water for drinking and personal hygiene. The aim is to raise £5,000 for the charity which works to ensure everyone, everywhere has access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.

The Banger Rally Challenge takes place every year and commences from Charlestown in Cornwall with the end destination somewhere in Europe. For 2023, this will be Saint Tropez.

Although the participants know the end destination, they do not know the route and are only provided the end destination of each stage on the morning of each day. In addition, the teams must undertake crazy challenges along the way, in the hope to win prizes, while endeavouring to win each stage.

The team have chosen a MG ZT-T in the style of the 1971 Steve McQueen Le Mans movie as their banger.

They said: “We’re embarking on this adventure with some trepidation as none of the team has any real vehicle mechanical knowledge to cope with any serious issues. If that happens, then it’s game over.

“But of the other participants, they’re all in a similar situation, and there have been many before us, who’ve all returned none the worse (more or less). Last resort, we can always take a bus, train, or plane home.”
