Tribute paid to stalwart of local music scene on new compilation

TRIBUTE is paid to multi-talented musician Paul Brook on Hot Music Live Presents Volume Four – the compilation series spotlighting Coventry and Warwickshire.

The drummer, programmer, producer, writer, composer and multi instrumentalist, who passed away in 2007, was a stalwart of the local music scene but his influence stretched far beyond.

Paul was a member or many bands including Analog, PZAZZ, the Reluctant Stereotypes, Mummy Calls, Le Cod Afrique, Cupid’s Inspiration, Red on Red, Manalyshi and the Jon Paul SETI Project among others.

And the list of musicians he worked and played with is even longer , including legendary names such as Percy Sledge, the Marvellettes, Gary Moore, Greg Lake and Bonnie Tyler among them.

In 1992, Paul created the world’s first realistic drum sample CD ‘Masterkit’ and was subsequently approached by Yamaha to create a custom drum library, which appeared on their products over the next few years.

Later sample CDs he created included “Chemical Beats” and “Brutal Beats”.

He even made it into cinema as one of the hits he co-wrote while in Mummy Calls, “Beauty Has Her Way”, features on the soundtrack of “The Lost Boys”.

On ‘Hot Music Live Presents Volume Four’ – dedicated to Paul’s memory – he can be heard on a number of tracks.

His friend and fellow musician Ted Duggan, of Badfinger, and Cupid’s Inspiration fame among others, said: “Paul Brook was simply one of the best drummers/ musicians on the planet, I worked with Paul on the Yamaha sample sessions and Chemical Beats sessions.

“Paul was in and out of hospital for the last two years of his life but he never let that get in the way of letting other drummers share his vast knowledge of drums and music.

“Along with hundreds of other people – in and out of the drumming community I miss Paul a great deal, but the impact he had on my drumming will never be forgotten and will continue to be a source of inspiration.”
