Warwickshire college seeks memories as it marks 70th birthday

A COLLEGE in Warwickshire is calling out for ex-students to share memories and photos of their time there as it celebrates its 70th birthday.

Moreton Morrell College, which is part of WCG, opened its doors in 1950 and will be hitting its platinum anniversary in May.

In that time, the institution has seen thousands of students come through its gates to study agriculture and land-based industries, and the college is looking to help alumni reconnect and share fond memories of their time there.

The college was originally known as Warwickshire Institute of Agriculture, and the first cohorts of students lived in accommodation on two upper floors of Moreton Hall.

It was officially opened on May 18, 1950 by the Right Honourable Earl of Huntingdon.

The first course saw 59 ex-service students sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture given a general education in crop and stock husbandry.

A general agriculture course was the only full-time course on offer at the college for the first 20 years, alongside a range of other certificates and part-time courses.

As far back as 1950, Moreton Morrell College had a relationship with Pershore College, supporting students attending full-time courses at the then proposed Horticultural College at Pershore. The colleges are now both part of the same group.

Moreton Morrell College principal Peter Husband said: “Moreton Morrell College has been at the heart of agriculture in Warwickshire and surrounding regions for 70 years and it would be fantastic to capture exactly what the college means to people who studied there.

“We would love to be able to reconnect with some of the students from the first few cohorts at the college in the 1950s, and hopefully help those alumni to get back in touch with people from their time here.

“The college has seen generation after generation of family come through its gates and we are sure there are some wonderful stories that started here at Moreton Morrell.

“It would be fantastic to be able to create a picture of what life was like at the college through the decades and we hope as many of our alumni get in touch as possible to help us celebrate this landmark birthday.”
