Warwickshire couples whose wedding abroad dreams shattered by Thomas Cook collapse offered free ceremony

COUPLES in Warwickshire whose wedding plans were left in tatters following the collapse of Thomas Cook are being offered a free ceremony.

Warwickshire County Council’s Registration Service is offering the ceremonies in one of its registration office rooms to the first six couples to apply.

The idea came from registrar Jayne Howle, a former Birmingham Airport manager, moved by the plight of couples whose dreams of a wedding abroad were shattered.

The travel giant went into liquidation last month leaving some 150,000 Brits stranded abroad and resulting in some 22,000 job losses.

County council spokeswoman Coun Kam Kaur said: “We recognise that marriage is a significant moment in a person’s life and we therefore understand how devastating the news will have been for couples getting married abroad in the next few weeks and months.

“We have a wonderful team here in Warwickshire who perform marriage ceremonies across the county who are willing to help the couples affected by conducting the ceremonies and booking one of our beautiful registration rooms for free.

“I think this shows the very real care and compassion of the team to help people fulfill their dreams. It’s more than a job, it’s a real vocation.”

“We hope that by offering our support that we can in some small way help to make a difficult situation a little easier.”

Couples must be from Warwickshire and must provide evidence of their 2019 Thomas Cook wedding booking by October 31.

Statutory notice fees will need to be paid by the couple.
