Warwickshire's The Bagley Boys to make screen debut

Leamington Editorial 11th Feb, 2019   0

THE BAGLEY Boys make their screen debut next month.

A TV pilot, based on the real Pals Battalions from the First World War, follows the lives of ten men and their families from the fictitious Warwickshire village of Bagley-on-the-Wold, whose lives are changed forever on the outbreak of the conflict in 1914.

It will be shown at Warwick Arts Centre on Sunday March 3, and writers Mike and Rebecca Tildesley hope it will provide the springboard to a commission for a full TV series.

Mike, an associate professor of maths and life sciences at Warwick University, said: “These ordinary men with no experience of soldiering answered their country’s call to join one of Lord Kitchener’s original Pals Battalions.

“Their initial elation at “doing their bit” for king and country soon evaporates as they witness the horrors of trench warfare. “The Bagley Boys follows the lives of these men and their families as they deal with the hardships of life at the front, the pain of separation from their loved ones and the knowledge that not all of them will return home.”

The pilot, featuring many local actors, was filmed at various locations around Warwickshire, including Stoneleigh Abbey, Weethley near Alcester, and Lighthorne.

The Bagley Boys is the husband and wife team’s first venture into screenwriting together and has been more than three years in getting to the pilot stage.

They both have a passion for the Great War era, and set up Armistice Theatre in 2014, and have written and staged a number of First World War themed plays.

They are now hoping to gain the interest of a major production company to allow them to develop the project into a six part TV series.

The Bagley Boys will be screened at 8pm. Tickets are £6 (£5 concessions).
