WORK has begun on around 650 homes in the new village of Upper Lighthorne.
Stratford District Council chairman Tony Dixon cut the sod at the development, in the parish previously known as Lighthorne Heath.
The development will eventually see some 2,000 homes built in the area.
Coun Dixon said: “I was delighted to attend the start of this important development. It will see a significant number of affordable homes added to our ever growing total as part of a new sustainable settlement that brings benefits to the wider community.
“The district council will be working closely with Upper Lighthorne Parish Council, the developers and other key stakeholders to ensure that community cohesion between existing residents of Lighthorne Heath and new residents is at the forefront of the growth of the new settlement.”
Along with homes the new villages will also see an ecological reserve, open space with recreational areas, play areas and a sports pavilion.
There will also be a village centre with a primary school, community hub, health centre and retail facilities.
