World's longest relay brings message of peace to town

THE WORLD’S longest relay run brought a message of peace to Leamington.

The European Peace Run team has been welcomed in over 160 countries, connecting communities around the world in a message of peace, friendship and harmony.

As part of its seven-month journey, the team of 16 recently dropped into the town to meet Leamington mayor Heather Calver and consort Gerald Calver, who held the Olympic style peace torch.

Coun Calver said: “The peace run is an extraordinary event that underlines the importance of peace in our world.

“A fundamental element of the peace run is visiting schools to celebrate the ideas and aspirations of the younger generation for peace in our world. It was a privilege to meet the runners and hear of the joy and inspiration that this initiative creates for all ages and communities.”

The event was founded by Indian spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy over 30 years ago and Pope Francis, Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, The Queen and Muhammad Ali are among those who have held the torch.
