Youngsters join canal DIY

Leamington Editorial 3rd Apr, 2017   0

YOUNGSTERS have been lending a hand to keep the Grand Union Canal tidy.

Working with education charity CVQO’s Schools Partnership Project, pupils from Henley School spent two days volunteering with the Canal and River Trust at the Hatton Locks.

Youngsters re-laid a stretch of towpath, removing surface water and potholes, re-seeded topsoil which had been worn away by walkers and cyclists and repainted fencing around the car park.

The project – which takes place one day a week over 12 weeks – aims to build character, resilience and self confidence in young people who may need a helping hand to achieve more from their school experience.

Steve Lambert from the Canal and River Trust said: “All the pupils have done a great job and really made the area better. You can really see the improvements.

“Without volunteers, work like this would not be done. I’m looking forward to coming to the graduation.”
