WARWICK Freedom Leisure hosted the hugely successful Warwickshire County Closed Squash Championships which featured 80 competitors.

There were 20 players more than expected in action, proving the popularity of the sport amongst youngsters in the county.

The competition was fiercely fought and saw the previous boys’ U11 champion Abdullah Eissa take the title in this year’s U13s category.

All other titles were taken by new contestants, as follows: Boys’ U9s – Benjamin Tate; Girls’ U11s – Mariam Eissa; Boys’ U11’s – James Averill; Girls’ U13s – Lucia Avery; Girls’ U15s – Jess Brazier; Boys’ U15s – Dan Haggarty; Girls’ U17s – Rosie Kirsch; Boys’ U17s – Lewis Anderson; Boys’ U19s Josh Owen.

Freedom Leisure supported the event organisers, Warwickshire Junior Squash, with free of charge court access and a donation of £200 towards the running costs, because they recognise the importance of the event in the county’s sporting and squash calendar and the fact it helps to develop excellence.

Freedom Leisure area manager Stuart Harding said: “England is one of the top nations when it comes to playing squash but Sport England have recently reported the number of participants is falling, so anything that can be done to reverse this is a positive.
