Cyclists compete to remember 'popular' long-standing club servants

Leamington Editorial 22nd Aug, 2017   0

CYCLING: CYCLISTS and athletes at Leamington C&AC competed to remember two of the club’s most popular characters.

Ted and Doris Clifford – both involved with the club since its amalgamation in 1928 until their deaths – were together timekeepers and track judges.

In memory of the pair, the club each year hosts a competition in memory, with the winner receiving a fitting carriage clock which has the names of previous winners engraved on a brass plate.

Lewis Fagge won the first stage of the competition – a four mile run around Myton Road and St Nicholas’ Park – in a time of 22:30. Laura Fuller was the first woman home meanwhile in 27:02.

Though Fagge and Fuller would only compete in the running stage, other athletes confirmed themselves available for the Cycle TT race.

The riders faced a ten mile route around lanes between Harbury and Bishops Itchington.

A combination of small hills, tight corners and unexpected roadworks made the contest challenging.

Tristan Warren completed the course first, beating runner up Tony Foster by 12 seconds.

Charlie Staveley (29:45) ended up third while Anouk Molliex had a walk-over when Susie Tawney missed her opportunity to ride, suffering with a cold in the week between the events.

Combining the two events together, Tristan Warren finished the men’s event in the fastest time (51:52) with Charlie Staveley second (53:24) and Tony Foster in third (56:54).

Elsewhere Anouk Molliex scooped the women’s trophy in a time of 1:02:51.
