Table-topping start continues - the latest from Warwick Hockey Club

A FIRST win in ten years over Rugby & East Warwickshire kept Warwick men’s first XI joint-top of Midlands Division One.

Dave Bryce’s late strike gave Warwick a deserved three points in a 3-2 scoreline, despite throwing away a two-goal lead.

The hosts started brightly and eventually broke the deadlock after a flurry of half-chances when Albie Cohen finished off a counter attack, firing the ball between the legs of the Rugby goalkeeper into the net.

Warwick doubled their lead from their first short corner, which was sent into the vicinity of Archie Gale who knocked the ball into the bottom corner.

Momentum swung in favour of the visitors after they pulled a goal back from a short corner of their own, before an equaliser arrived from a similar set-piece before half time.

As a result, the second half was a cagey affair, with heated challenges aplenty in the search for a goal.

With time running out, a short corner into Pete Newton was received, taken forward and then played into Bryce to apply the finish and win the game.

Despite a late push from Rugby, Warwick held on to keep themselves level on points with University of Nottingham Seconds.

The men’s fifth XI were not quite as fortunate in their South East Division Three clash with Hampton-in-Arden Fourths, going down 4-0 at home.

After scrambling to put together a starting line-up for the match, Warwick were out-played in the wet weather as the only other team representing the club last weekend.
