MONICA WILLIAMSON claimed gold at the British Masters Cross Country National Championships to add another national title to her collection.

Williamson, of Leamington Cycling and Athletics Club, came home first in the W60 age category around the stunning grounds of Somerhill School in Kent.

The Leamington runner finished 17th overall in a time of 28 minutes 2 seconds, more than a minute and a half clear of the next W60 athlete over the 6k course.

Andrea Clement of Blackheath and Bromley won the overall race in a time of 24 minutes 49 seconds.

The race was run in near perfect conditions which comprised of two laps with plenty of climbing, including a severe 50m incline to test the athletes.

Williamson ran an even-paced race and although well clear of her nearest age-group rival, her competitive instinct meant she was prepared to battle with athletes in younger categories.

A thrilling finish saw Williamson outsprint another runner on the line and has qualified for an international selection team race later in the year having already taken National 5k and 10k road titles earlier this season.
