ATHLETICS - Spa Striders excel from Manchester to Las Vegas

SPA Striders members enjoyed an excellent week of running with personal best (PB) times and podium finishes from Manchester to Las Vegas.

Striders athletes Nathan Morris and Neil Smith took on the Yorkshire Marathon as the former finished in 2 hours 53 minutes to beat his previous PB by nine minutes.

And Smith also posted an impressive time to come home in 22nd place and 14th in his category in a time of 2 hrs 37 mins 1 second.

There were more PB’s for Striders athletes in Manchester as Matt Leydon completed the half marathon in under 90 minutes, finishing in a time of 1 hr 29 mins 16 secs.

And Gabrielle Freeman took three minutes off her half marathon PB, finishing in 1 hr 51 mins 58 secs while Gary Perkins came home in 1 hr 59 mins 19 secs to finish under the two-hour mark.

Over in Peterborough, Striders athlete Daniel Hobson took on the Great Eastern Half and finished in a PB time of 1 hr 37 mins 42 secs.




Elsewhere, in the Oxford Half Marathon, Striders runner Ruth Tennant led the team home in 1 hr 55 mins 30 secs followed by Amy Butler (1:57:46), Georgie Acton, Anthony Claydon and Lydia Hamilton-Smith (all 2:11:51).

Close behind were Fraser Whyte (2:18:00), Jane Wackett (2:24:59), Elizabeth Adeleke (2:25:27) and Sophie Peasley (2:36:02).

In Bath, Rosie Clarke completed a half marathon in 1:50:08 closely followed by Nisha Kandola in 2:00:36.


Elsewhere, Ash Hogg took part in the Centurion Autumn 100 – a 100-mile race along trails including the Ridgeway and Thames Path.

Hogg completed the race in a staggering 22 hrs 42 mins 12 secs to come home in 64th place overall.

Further afield in Hungary, Jack Gammon set a new marathon PB time in Budapest, crossing the line in 3 hrs 25 mins 16 secs.

Lastly, across the pond, eight Striders took part in the Twilight Red Rock 10k just a few miles outside of Las Vegas.

Ian Allen came home in first place in 36 mins 37 secs with Chris McKeown second in 38 mins 12 secs and Doug Rattray 11th in 49 mins 56 secs.

Next to finish was James Robbins in 54 mins 20 secs while Kathryn Rattray came home in 1 hr 3 mins 23 secs and Mairi Allen, Fiona Ferguson and Claire Westrope finished together in 1 hr 5 mins 33 secs.
