ATHLETICS - Spa Striders on form in Summer Series race

SPA Striders athletes competed in a variety of local races with great distinction over the past week.

A number of Striders took on the Rugby Six, part of the Striders Summer Series, as several club members produced outstanding performances.

First Strider home was Neil Smith in 33 mins 46 secs who placed eighth overall while Chris Wilson set a new personal best (PB) time of 35 mins 37 secs.

And Glen McIlreavy also set a new PB of 38 mins 56 secs as Trevor Wilkinson came home inside the 40-minute mark in 39 mins 26 secs.

Just outside the 40-minute mark were Jason Hemming 40 mins 1 sec, Laura Peake 40 mins 38 secs (PB) and George Smith 40 mins 58 secs (PB).

Also setting a new PB was Carlos Vallejo 41 mins with Pete Teevan 41 mins 17 secs just behind while Clare Hinton 42 mins 11 secs finished third in her age category.




A flurry of PB’s followed as Daniel Hobson 45 mins 30 secs, Doug Rattray 45 mins 56 secs and Rosy Skilton 47 mins 23 secs all set personal best times.

Bringing Striders home were Ruth Tennant 53 mins 5 secs, Gary Perkins 55 mins 6 secs, David Buist 55 mins 29 secs (PB), Sean Longergan 56 mins 7 secs, Kathryn Rattray 58 mins 30 secs (PB), Georgie Acton 58 mins 55 secs (PB), Tim Robb 58 mins 59 secs (PB) and Anthony Claydon 58 mins 59 secs (PB).


The club’s masters ladies team also secured an impressive third place finish overall.

Elsewhere, Striders saw two athletes take part in the Leamington Cycling and Athletics Club Open 3,000m race.

Rob Egan and Ian Davis took on the challenge with the latter close to breaking the 12-minute mark as he completed seven and a half laps of the track in 12 minutes 1.8 seconds.

And Egan came home in a season’s best time of 12 mins 50.4 secs following a strong run.

Lastly, four Striders took part in the On The Edge triathlon at Compton Verney as Andrew Pope (1 hour 41 mins) and Rosie Scares (1 hr 42 mins) completed the sprint distance.

Additionally, in the middle distance event Mike Pugh (5 hrs 8 mins) finished fifth in his age category while Mariam Apsley (5 hrs 29 mins) claimed second place in her age category.
