ATHLETICS - Striders out in force across a range of races

SPA Striders took part in a number of races over the past week including the Draycote Water Running Festival which hosted three different events.

Striders had one runner in each race as Chris Wilson secured his first ever podium finish in the 5k as he came home in third place in 17 minutes 47 seconds whilst Gabrielle Freeman finished in 51 mins 23 secs in the 10k and Jo Fleming ran the half marathon distance in 1 hour 34 mins 50 secs.

The club also had a number of runners enter the Broadway Half and Full Marathon which takes in some of the finest views in the Cotswolds including Broadway tower, the Vale of Evesham, Snowhill, Stanway, Winchcombe, and Sudeley Castle.

Steve French and Patrick Crummy were the first Striders home over the full marathon distance in a time of 4:26:57 and were followed by Ben Cohen in 4:31:35.




There were just 22 seconds between Iain Roebuck (4:54:00), Will Allman (4:54:00), Keith Wilson (4:54:01), Luke Bennett (4:54:06) and Patrick James (4:54:22) before Matt Walklatt (5:08:23) crossed the line just after the five-hour mark.

And over the half marathon distance John Paul Hunt was the first Strider home in 1:48:17 to finish fifth overall.


Next home for Striders was Andrew Owen (1:54:37), Lloyd Harriman (2:03:48), George Smith (2:06:29), Paul Kirby (2:07:35), Paul Quinney (2:09:53), and Iain Davis (2:23:01).

The remaining Striders to finish were: Naomi Cruden (2:27:32), Kirsty Middleton (2:27:34), Tina Roebuck (2:45:52), Jacqui Quinney (2:45:55), Lucy Walton (2:45:58), Lynn Ward (2:45:58) and Rosie Scares and Georgie Acton (both 2:49:59).

Closer to home, it was the second race in the Tempo Events Winter Series which consists of five 10km races that run from October to February near Illmington.

Last-minute entry Kat Robertson was the first Strider across the line and third lady (second in her age category) in a superb time of 46 mins 55 secs.

Kelsey Wiberley (47:37, third in age category) was the next female and Strider home and was closely followed by Isla Colclasure (47:44).

They were followed by: James Wiberley (49:07), Paul Carrot (51:32), Abi Morton (1:01:36), Gary Perkins (1:04:13, third in age category), Miriam Scullion (1:06:50), Ellen Powell (1:17:45) and Natalie Jackson (1:52:47).

Philip Haines was the only Strider to head north for racing this weekend, for the Derby 10-mile race.

The race is advertised as being fast and flat and passes the grounds of the beautiful Elvaston Castle Country Park and Haines achieved a fabulous time of 1:42:35.

Elsewhere, Andy Roach travelled in the opposite direction and headed south to the Hampshire coast for the Gosport Half Marathon an event put on by Gosport Road Runners, he used the coastal tail wind on the home straight to the finish in 1:54:31.

Lastly, Lucy Tugwell and her four-legged dog Rueben went to Locko Park for the second race weekend in the Midland Canicross League, the pair came fifth in their category.
