ATHLETICS - Striders out in force at London Marathon

SPA Striders athletes took on the London Marathon last weekend as 17 of the club’s runners completed the prestigious race.

And two Striders produced sub three-hour times as Chris Liddle (2 hours 56 minutes 28 seconds) and John-Paul Hunt (2 hrs 56 mins 41 secs) excelled to finish just seconds apart.

Matt Leydon produced a similarly inspired run to take several minutes off his personal best (PB) time as he finished in 3 hrs 21 mins 19 secs whilst Carolyn Wilkinson and Adam Notley both crossed the line in 3 hrs 24 mins 34 secs.

A flurry of Striders came home next in the form of Gethyn Friswell (3:37:12), Joseph McCullagh (3:38:40), Joanna Fleming (3:39:11) and Simon Ludford (3:40:30).

Slightly behind that pack were Anne Hurrell (3:47:23), Simon Parsons (3:50:03), Patrick James (3:50:14) and Mark Hone (4:08:26).

And making up the Striders cohort were Amy Butler (4:33:57), Helen Edwards (4:36:42), Lorraine Parsons (4:52:08) and Georgie Acton (5:03:22).

Away from the capital, Susan Cox made her age category debut for England at the Chester Marathon.

And Cox ran a storming race to come home in 3 hrs 43 mins 33 secs to place fifth in her age category and fourth out of the English runners.

Other Striders to complete the full distance in Chester were Shaun Martin (4:06:13) and Paul Atherton (4:06:20) whilst Clare Hinton continued her comeback with a time of 2:00:35 in the 26.2k Metric Marathon.

Over in Wales, Emma Bish ran a superb 1 hr 47 mins 22 secs in the Cardiff Half Marathon whilst Helene Wright was in fine form at the Warwickshire Triathlon, on her return to racing postpartum, as she finished as the third lady over the Super Sprint distance.

And Sandra Stokes won her age category over the Sprint distance to cap off an excellent weekend for the club.
