ATHLETICS - Striders return to cross country action

SPA Striders athletes took part in the third race of the cross country league season this past weekend.

Spa’s ladies team travelled to Warley Woods in Birmingham to tackle a wet and muddy four-mile course in the Midland Women’s Cross Country League.

And Charlotte Everard continued her excellent season to lead the ladies home in 27 minutes 18 seconds and finish as the fifth masters athlete.

She was closely followed by Kat Robertson in 29 mins 2 secs and Lauren Turner in 30 mins 31 secs whilst Laura Peake 30 mins 36 secs, Anne Hurrell 30 mins 46 secs and Fiona Ferguson 30 mins 52 secs finished just outside the half-hour mark.




Just behind were Kirsty Middleton 31 mins 3 secs, Clare Hinton 31 mins 7 secs, Sara Northover 32 mins 3 secs, Emma Bish 33 mins 25 secs and Rosy Skilton 33 mins 30 secs.

Further back were Lucy Hartwright 34 mins 18 secs, Rosie Clarke 34 mins 49 secs, Lucy Tugwell 34 mins 58 secs, Gabrielle Freeman 35 mins 46 secs, Kate Evans 36 mins 28 secs, Claire Westrope 36 mins 39 secs and Verity Hill 44 mins 14 secs.


The club’s masters team produced another strong performance to finish third overall on the day.

Elsewhere, the men’s team travelled to Ipsley Meadows in Redditch and competed in similarly wet and muddy conditions in the Birmingham and District Invitation Cross Country League.

And Chris McKeown continued his fine season to lead the team home in 34 mins 46 secs to finish in 19th place.

He was followed by Neil Smith in 35 mins 33 secs, Richard Spear 37 mins 9 secs, John-Paul Hunt 37 mins 20 secs, Adam Notley 37 mins 57 secs and Niel Strydom 38 mins 15 secs.

Finishing just past the 40-minute mark was Chris Wallace in 40 mins 7 secs, Andy Collins 41 mins 5 secs, Simon Ludford 41 mins 19 secs, Andrew Owen 41 mins 25 secs, Tim Beresford 41 mins 26 secs, Chris Wilson 42 mins 48 secs, Gethyn Friswell 43 mins 37 secs, James Hartwright 44 mins 10 secs, Jason Hemming 44 mins 44 secs and Shaun Martin 44 mins 59 secs.

The men’s team produced a solid performance to move off the bottom of the Division Two table.
