LEAMINGTON Cycling and Athletics Club duo Monica Williamson and James Hunter claimed team gold representing England in their respective age categories at the prestigious British and Irish Masters Cross Country International.

The event took place in Glasgow as the the four countries of the United Kingdom as well as Ireland descended upon Tollcross Park.

And the course consisted of 2km laps which took in a number of stiff hills with the men’s race over an 8km distance and the women’s race over a 6km distance.

Both Williamson and Hunter received their international call-ups after producing outstanding runs in the cross-country selection race last month.

And Williamson, making her 12th consecutive appearance at the event, showed her pedigree to lead home the W60 team and secure gold for England.

After a steady start, Williamson worked her way through the field to finish in a time of 24 minutes 28 seconds with the event won by Scotland’s Fiona Matheson in 23 mins 34 secs.

Fellow club member Hunter impressed on his England debut, coming in as the crucial fourth scorer to ensure England won team gold in the M45 category.

After an assured run, Hunter finished strongly to cross the line in 27 mins 25 secs with England’s Jan Bailey claiming overall victory in 25 mins 53 secs.
