Bears brilliant, but not quite Kings of the castle

WARWICKSHIRE Bears 2 Wheelchair Basketball side were edged in a top-of-the-table clash in Second Division South against the only other unbeaten side in the league, going down 61-56 to Thames Valley Kings on Saturday.

From the outset, the Kings looked to enact their dominance on the game and display exactly why they too had been unbeaten alongside the visiting Bears, having forward Reece Barker to thank for providing them with early points which would build a solid lead, ending the quarter with a 20-12 advantage.

Bears struggled to fully claw their way back into the contest, but narrowed the gap to eight points and a 34-26 scoreline at half-time.

The third quarter saw the Bears work their way back into it and edged the scoring for the quarter, but still trailed 48-42 with a six point deficit to overturn.

A frantic final quarter provided a highly entertaining end to the hard-fought contest, but the Bears were unable to breach a solid Kings defence often enough in the closing moments of the match, the hosts seeing out a victory that delivers a statement of their title intentions to the rest of the league at this early stage.

Bears 2 coach Daz Peasley was complimentary towards the opposing side and already began to envision revenge on Thames Valley Kings in the return leg in May.

“I’d like to congratulate the Kings today for a great game and great win. We lost it in the first quarter and it was an uphill struggle after that.

“We just ran out of time at the end. It’s set up the return game, which is the last of the season, to be a title decider and hopefully we’ll make a better start in that one.”

The Bears are on the hunt for sponsors to help the club provide further sporting opportunities to local disabled people, any interested parties are invited to contact the Bears by email at [email protected], or by phone on 079465 18354.
