Bears' impressive Southern League form continues against Coventry

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: WARWICKSHIRE Bears continued their impressive start to the British First Division South after defeating Coventry Academy 66-40.

Tom Masterson’s team came out on top in this closely fought contest to enter the Christmas break on a high.

From tip off, both teams were on form – travelling basket to basket in a high-tempo game.

With neither team being able to take hold of the other, the scoreboard ticked over with the Bears having a slight lead at the end of the quarter at 17-12.

The second quarter mirrored the first as Cameron Swann proved clinical in front of net as Bears opened an eight point lead.

Bears put the game beyond Coventry in the third quarter though, largely thanks to some accurate shooting from Dan Gill and Ben Haigh – both taking full advantage of the opportunities presented to them.

Leading by 20 points at the end of the third, Bears soon cemented their victory as the game ended 66-40.

Coach Masterson, who used the game to allow some of his younger players time on the court, said: “It was a slow start again and we need to be starting stronger especially with the teams we are facing this year or we’ll come out wanting.

“On a good note, Dan Gill was back to his best and Ben Haigh was awesome.

“I’d like to give a mention to Cameron Swan and young Tom Cutts – who has only just celebrated his 15th birthday.

“Both of them are a credit to the coaching staff at Coventry.”

Elsewhere in the Second Division South Bears defeated Cardiff Met Archers 47-26 while Bears 3 beat Coventry Academy 56-50 in a close Third Division Central contest.

Bears are next in action this weekend as the ladies team travel to Sheffield to compete in the BWB Women’s League.
