DANNY Quartermaine is eyeing titles in a lower weight class as he belatedly prepares for his sixth professional fight.
Quartermaine fights again when BCB Promotions return to the Hangar Events Venue, in Wolverhampton, on the Sunday, October 30.
The Leamington fighter had been due to fight on September 9, in Birmingham only for the show to be cancelled, at a day’s notice, as a mark of respect, after the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
However, Quartermaine has kept himself in shape and now resumes his efforts, with a second outing of 2022 after a maiden TKO, in the pro ranks, last time out.
Opponent Myron Patrick was pulled out with a broken nose, in the first round of their meeting, adding to four one-sided points victories.
The 25-year-old has secured points whitewashes over Ibrar Riyaz, Matar Sambou, Dean Evans and Dean Jones, beating Evans in his first six-rounder.
There were 18 months between his 2020 debut, against Riyaz, and returning to face Sambou, due to the pandemic, but he’s now firmly back on track.
Quartermaine has mainly competed at lightweight but plans to drop down the divisions, if the opportunity to become a champion arises.
He’s brought with him significant amateur experience, from 89 bouts with 75 wins, representing Cleary’s Boxing Gym in his hometown.
Quartermaine said: “I never really ever class myself as in a training camp, because I’m always fit. I’ve just kept myself ticking over, really, and waited for another date.
“We do step things up and get more sparring but, at this point of my career, I have to be able to adapt to different situations, which means being as ready as you can be.
“If a fight gets called off, you have to be professional about it, by carrying on training and staying at the weight. I’m never far away from where I need to be.
“When I boxed in Coventry (at the Skydome in April, 40-36 points win over Dean Jones), I was literally away on holiday when I got the call, so it was a quick turnaround.
“I’ve had to box at lightweight so far (as a pro) because we’ve struggled to get opponents at super featherweight. I could probably even get down to featherweight.
“Either way, I’m looking to go for a Midlands title shot, early next year. I’d like to get another couple of wins in, first, between now and Christmas.
“If I can get the Midlands (title), I’d probably be able to go for the English (title) a few months later, which would really establish me in the pro game.
“I’m just eager to get back in there and I want to step it up now. I’ve had learning fights. I got the stoppage, last time, but that irritated me, a bit, because it only lasted a round.
“I could have done with a round or two more, just to give the fans their money’s worth, but I just caught his nose (with a right hand) and it popped. His corner threw the towel in.”
