Clearys take positives from pair of defeats

BOXING: CLEARYS Boxing Gym travelled to Blackpool on Saturday as rising stars Danny Quartermaine and Jake Finch supported an England vs USA show.

Though both fighters lost, the Leamington gym took the positives from what were closely fought bouts against tough competition.

Quartermaine faced Jake Clarke while Finch tackled Ishmel Khan from Hunslet ABC.

Boxing in front of England coaches, Quatermaine was embroiled in a physical fight with Clarke, who was warned several times throughout the fight for holding.

Despite this, Clarke fought on and won on points.

But coach Edwin Cleary was satisfied with Quartermaine’s performance.

He said: “The England coaches were impressed and thanked him afterwards for taking the fight.

“I know Danny is frustrated with the result but he should take heart from it.

“With only two weeks of preparation, Danny’s performance outweighed the result for me.”

Meanwhile Jake Finch, who usually boxes at 52kg, moved up to the 56kg division to face Khan, who last year made the Elite ABA Semifinals.

Finch’s bout ended in defeat, but positive comments from England head coach Mick Driscoll after the fight encouraged the teenager.

Elsewhere Lewis Williams has been put on full-time training at Team GB as he continues to drive towards an Olympic Games spot at Tokyo 2020.
