FOOTBALL - Brakes back in drop zone after Boston defeat

PAUL Holleran believes his Leamington side ‘lacked character’ as the Brakes slipped back into the relegation zone following a 2-0 home defeat against Boston United on Non-League Day.

Jordan Burrow and Billy Chadwick scored in either half at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium as the Brakes suffered a first defeat in four games at home.

The result sees Leamington drop to 21st in the National League North table, one point and one place from safety having played more game than the three teams above them.

Holleran said: “It’s been a really difficult week for us, the second-half sums up the way the week has gone.

“I can’t keep making excuses, I can’t keep on about the schedule, we just looked off it, we didn’t keep the energy levels up that we needed to, the second-half performance was a problem for us.

“It’s disappointing because the last five or so games here we’ve shown lots of character and second-half we showed a complete lack of character which was very disappointing.

“They don’t deserve it [over 1,100 supporters in attendance] we need to do better representing these people, it’s their football club.

“At the moment we’re making things too easy for the opposition at key moments, there’s still plenty of games and points to play for.”

The Brakes were punished for a slow start as Boston took the lead on eight minutes when Burrow rose highest at the back post to head home Zak Mills’s cross from the right past a helpless Ted Cann.

Leamington enjoyed the better of the play up until the break as Jack Lane headed straight at Boston goalkeeper Cameron Gregory before Dan Meredith’s low effort was saved.

However, Boston sealed the points on 77 minutes when Chadwick sent a superb half-volley over Cann’s head from 45-yards out as the on-loan keeper was caught off his line to leave the Brakes stunned.

Leamington are next in action away at Alfreton Town on Saturday, April 1 with kick-off at 3pm at The Impact Arena.
