FOOTBALL - Brakes end tough season with win against Southport

PAUL Holleran admitted he would find it hard to walk away from Leamington after the Brakes ended a disappointing season with a 2-1 win against Southport.

Leamington’s relegation from the National League North had already been confirmed as goals from Dan Turner and Devon Kelly-Evans earned victory on the final day at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium.

And Holleran, who has taken charge of more than 600 Leamington games, hopes the Brakes will be competitive in the Southern League Premier Division Central next season.

Holleran said: “It’s very hard for me to consider stepping away because of the affinity I have with the club and the fans, we’ll try and regroup in the summer and try and be competitive.

“There’s an element where you think ‘is it time for somebody else’ I’ve been here a long time but it’s a real good club here and we’ve competed for years, we’ve had our days.

“We’ve built something fantastic here and we want to keep it going, we’re probably only one win away from still being in the league.

“We knew we had to win the last three games at home to stay in the league, the league’s caught up with us a little bit.

“We’ve been very unfortunate with injuries but over the period of the season we haven’t been good enough and we’ve made too many mistakes, it’s been tough.”

The Brakes ended the season in 22nd place and finished just two points from safety with Leamington made to rue a 15-game winless run between October and February.
