FOOTBALL - Brakes secure first away win of season at Brackley

PAUL Holleran celebrated his 650th game in charge of Leamington in style as the Brakes picked up their first away win of the season at Brackley Town.

Former Brackley man Adam Walker put Leamington ahead with a superb strike early in the second half before Liam Cross’s free-kick doubled the Brakes lead and Town netted a late consolation.

And the result means the Brakes sit 19th in the National League North table, two points clear of the relegation zone.

The win was Leamington’s first ever victory at Brackley’s St James Park ground in 10 attempts and Holleran was delighted to end his side’s barren run on their travels this season.

Holleran said: “I’m so pleased, one of the reasons the fans don’t give up on us is because we try, we’ve deserved the odd victory on the road but it was nice to get back-to-back wins.

“There were some outstanding individual performances, I wouldn’t know where to start but it was a really good performance.

“I just feel we’re making strides, we thoroughly deserved the win, we looked like a really good National League North side for the first hour.

“It’s important for us that we build on this and do it week in week out, there’s enough in that changing room now to put some points on the board.”

The Brakes more than matched their fourth-placed opponents for the first hour and took the lead on 55 minutes when Walker drove infield from the left and curled a delightful effort into the top right corner.

And the visitors doubled their lead on the hour mark when Cross placed a free-kick into the bottom corner past the despairing dive of veteran goalkeeper Danny Lewis.

Brackley halved the deficit on 85 minutes when substitute Levi Amantchi stole in to tap home but the Brakes held on to secure an invaluable three points.

Leamington are next in action at home to Chester on Saturday, March 11 with kick-off at 3pm at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium.
