FOOTBALL - Brakes without win in five after Chorley defeat

Leamington Editorial 18th Oct, 2022   0

LEAMINGTON are now winless in their last five games after the Brakes slipped to a 1-0 defeat away at Chorley.

Connor Hall’s first-half penalty proved decisive with Paul Holleran’s side unable to find a way back into the game at Victory Park.

The result means Leamington have dropped to 12th in the National League North table.

And the visitors were under pressure early on as Adam Bateman’s free-kick hit the top of the crossbar from 20-yards out.

Leamington goalkeeper Callum Hawkins then raced off his line to snuff out another Chorley chance before Justin Johnson’s shot was deflected behind.

The Brakes responded with their first sight of goal soon after as Simeon Maye drove a half volley wide of the target

However, Chorley took the lead on 23 minutes when Hall was caught a fraction late by Brakes keeper Hawkins as the pair competed for a high ball with the former sending the latter the wrong way from the resulting spot kick.

And the home side almost doubled their lead when Ollie Shenton struck the post after Leamington carelessly conceded possession.

Shenton was denied by Hawkins just before the break with debutant Rackeem Reid crowded out in a promising position at the other end.

Leamington looked for a response after the interval as Louis Hall headed wide from Maye’s cross before Hawkins saved well from Johnson’s effort.

The visitors survived a scare soon after as Dan Meredith made a superb clearance off the line to prevent Jonathan Ustabasi’s thunderous volley from finding the net.

And Chorley’s Mike Calveley then powered a shot inches past the post after he dispossessed Theo Streete.

The Brakes were unable to make their late pressure count as Maye’s free-kick sailed over the crossbar before substitute Ben Usher-Shipway had a shot deflected behind.

Holleran’s side had one final chance to draw level only for Streete to head straight at Matt Urwin in the Chorley goal to register Leamington’s only shot on target.

Leamington are next in action at home to AFC Fylde on Saturday, October 22 with kick-off at 3pm at the Your Co-Op Community stadium.
