KORY Burke’s late goal earned Racing Club Warwick a crucial 1-0 win against title rivals and league leaders Wellingborough Town.

Burke’s 79th minute goal settled the game as the Racers kept themselves in title contention with a huge victory at Townsend Meadow.

And the result means Warwick sit third in the United Counties League Premier Division South table, eight points behind leaders Wellingborough with two games in-hand.

The Racers almost took the lead following some neat build-up play around the Wellingborough box before Burke curled a shot narrowly wide of the post.

And the home side went close again soon after as Simeon Cobourne’s low shot deflected inches past the post with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

At the other end, Warwick goalkeeper Sam Lomax made an important stop to keep out Jorrin John’s effort.

Cobourne then cut in from the left inside the box and hit the base of the post before James Hancocks saw his goalbound shot deflected behind for a corner.

After the break, Wellingborough goalkeeper Adam North held Charlie Jones’ shot from distance before two Warwick players threw themselves in the way of Jessi Obeng’s effort with the Wellingborough man well-placed in the box.

The home side remained on top as Callum Carsley’s corner from the right hit the post and bounced clear.

However, the Racers eventually broke the deadlock on 79 minutes when Burke slid home Josh Willis’s cross from the right from close range as Warwick held on to secure a vital victory.

Racing are next in action away at Leicester Nirvana on Tuesday, March 19 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Hamilton Park.
