LEAMINGTON saw their winless run in the league stretch to 11 matches following a heavy 4-1 defeat at Merthyr Town.

The Brakes remain bottom of the table after losing for the fourth league game in a row at Penydarren Park.

Both Noah Smerdon and Ricardo Rees scored braces for the home side while Seb Thompson netted a consolation for the Brakes in injury time.

The result leaves Leamington five points from safety at the bottom of the National League North table.

High-flying Merthyr broke the deadlock on 19 minutes when Smerdon’s flick-on at a corner found the net despite the best efforts of Eddie Brearey in the Leamington net.

And Smerdon doubled his tally for the game on 54 minutes as he pounced on a missed clearance to finish from close range.

The league’s top scorer Rees all but sealed the points for Merthyr on 71 minutes following some neat play in the channel.

And Rees scored his 23rd goal in 19 league games this season five minutes later when he nodded the ball over the line after Brearey kept out the striker’s initial effort.

The Brakes ended a run of three league games without a goal in injury time as Kidderminster Harriers loanee Thompson beat two defenders before finding the net from just inside the penalty area.

Leamington are next in action against Worksop Town on Saturday, November 29 with kick-off at 3pm at the Your Co-op Community Stadium.
