Harbury RFC eager to continue feel-good factor

Ben Tyler 24th Nov, 2020

WITH GRASSROOTS sport set to make an eagerly-anticipated return next week, Harbury Rugby Club are one club in particular rubbing their hands with glee when their doors can officially be reopened once more.

The Waterloo Fields outfit have been forced into taking an inventive stance when delivering rugby sessions and making themselves available as a community venue, finding great success in doing so prior to the ongoing national lockdown.

One of the biggest positives to have arisen from the turbulent year have been the high attendance levels for two different sessions hosted by the club on a weekly basis – general training delivered by Harbury coach Hendry Rheeders on Tuesdays, followed by fitness-focused nights on Thursdays.

Strong numbers also apply to the club’s female touch rugby side, which continues to go from strength to strength.

Established in the summer months of 2019 in conjunction with partner club Wellesbourne Ladies, player numbers now stand at 48 for girls and women aged between 14 and 58 – with new players openly invited to join in with the fun regardless of previous experience.

Harbury are keen to continue the growth of the game in the local area to both promote the importance of keeping fit and the feel-good factor felt from playing sport socially.

The ladies team train every Thursday night between 7pm and 8.15pm at Harbury RFC, with new players interested in joining asked to contact Claire at wellesbourneladies@gmail.com, by phone on 07506 309821, or on the club’s relevant social media platforms.

Meanwhile, efforts to cater for the community were best highlighted by the opening of Harbury’s clubroom for a screening of the recent Gallagher Premiership final featuring local side Wasps – a successful, COVID-19 safe event that allowed the club to screen a triple header of the Autumn Nations Cup.

While social distancing and safety measures are being adhered to, Harbury hope to pick up where they left off come the end of the national lockdown on Wednesday, December 2, and ask members and locals to keep their eyes peeled on the latest ongoings at the club via the relevant social media platforms.
