High-flying ladies secure impressive Wasps win

RUGBY UNION: HIGH-flying Kenilworth Ladies secured an impressive 23-17 victory against Wymondham Wasps on Sunday to see them reach the quarter finals of the Intermediate Cup, writes Cath Lyon.

The side continued their unbeaten run this season against Wasps, a team with a solid reputation in the league above the Glasshouse Lane outfit.

Despite the three-hour journey east to Norfolk, Kenilworth started strongly with a try in the first five minutes courtesy of centre Felicity Baldwin.

This was followed shortly after by a penalty from prop Rebecca Lewis. Strong work from the pack and slick handling then put winger Sophie Henry over the line before the close of the opening forty to give Kenilworth a 13-0 lead. The opposition responded, however, with an unconverted try to make the score 13-5 at half time.

The second half saw the opposition come back strongly in tough conditions, leaving the Ladies with plenty of work to do to secure victory.

Their lead was subsequently extended, however, with a well-earned try from captain Rebecca Lane. A comeback from Wasps then made the score 18-10, but it was the Ladies’ grit and stamina that eventually won through.

A powerhouse finish from second row Ada Ajoku diminished any opposition hopes of a comeback, despite a final converted try late on, to give a full-time score of 23-17 to Kenilworth.

The victory sees Kenilworth reach the final eight of the Intermediate Cup, with the side hoping that the weekend’s performance will set the tone for the next half of the season.

Their next outing is a trip to Old Northamptonians RFC on Sunday 14th January, and their next home game is against Wellingborough on Sunday, February 4.
