Kenilworth Ladies make cup progress

RUGBY UNION: KENILWORTH Ladies have progressed to the second round of the Intermediate Cup, writes Sophie Freestone.

The Glasshouse Lane outfit defeated fellow Women’s NC Midlands 1 side Old Northamptonians 55-10.

The win came just seven days after Kenilworth secured a 57-0 victory over the same opposition.

Despite the dominant scoreline, it was the hosts that made the better start when scoring an unconverted try on the left after only six minutes.

But hopes of building on their early lead were wiped out when Caroline Spence powered her way over the line. Rebecca Lewis’ conversion earned Kenilworth the lead.

Kenilworth then started to establish a lead and were soon 12-5 up. But that was before Old Northamptonians hit back with a try of their own to close the gap to two points.

Howles then got her name on the score sheet after half an hour of play when dodging her way past the hosts defence to extend Kenilworth’s lead to nine points.

A further try from Sophie Henry added to Kenilworth’s score, and by half-time they’d built a comfortable 14 point lead.

The second half proved to be a case of one-way traffic.

A converted try from Baldwin followed by touchdowns from Gemma Gilleece and Abi Minor earned Kenilworth a commanding 33 point lead.

Henry bagged her brace to take Kenilworth to 48 points before 50 was clocked courtesy of Siobhan Allison-Moore’s try.

Lewis’ excellent conversion from out wide sailed through the uprights to give her team a comfortable 55-10 victory.

Kenilworth Ladies are next in action on Sunday against Lutterworth in the league.
