Leahy boxes his way into national quarter finals

BOXING: NICK Leahy booked his spot at next week’s National Quarter Finals in Bridlington, North Yorkshire, following another solid display.

Leahy fought Tony Welsh, 64kg champion of Merseyside and Cheshire, on Saturday and won on points following a strong final round.

With no knowledge of his opponent, Leahy boxed sharply in the opening round.

Using what he knew about Welsh from the opening round, Leahy went on the offense and won the second round comfortably.

It was the Fitzpatrick’s boxer’s fourth win in three weeks.

Coach Babs Kandola said: “It was great to watch.

“All the work in the gym is coming to fruition in the ring. These are exciting times for Nick and the club.

“The club is buzzing right now and there’s lots more talent coming through.”

Elsewhere Leah Gunton has booked her spot at this year’s National Finals in Birmingham at the end of the month, and Nick will be hoping to give Fitzpaticks a shot at landing both titles.
