Leahy to represent the midlands after light welterweight win in Stoke

BOXING: NICK Leahy landed the Midland Senior Development Light Welterweight title in Stoke-on-Trent on Sunday, beating Jordan Simmons by unanimous decision.

The Fitzpatricks Boxing Gym fighter got one over his Telford-based opponent after overcoming Simmons’ illusive style which presented its challenges.

Leahy – who will now represent the midlands at 64KG in the national quarter finals – displayed a good style and showcased his ring craft in the early stages.

Appearing to be the physically stronger man, Leahy’s power was an obvious deterrent to he slick counter punching Simmons.

Only a strong final round secured the win for Leahy as all the judges scorecards were in favour of the Leamington man.

The win secured Leahy’s spot at the national pre quarter finals, held in Newdigate this weekend.

Coach Babs Kandola was full of praise for the youngster.

He said: “We believe there is a lot more to come from Nick.

“Nick is settling into the competition and the addition of his first title will only boost his confidence and character.”
