Leamington are in better shape after victory over Halesowen

Leamington Editorial 23rd Aug, 2018   0

LEAMINGTON eased their Birmingham League Division One relegation worries with a 97-run success at Halesowen.

Spa were asked to bat first and made a cautious start through Jon Wigley and Luke de Souza.

They made 37 before de Souza fell to Eddie Rhodes.

Wigley followed soon but Waqar Ahmed (20) and William Mashinge (107 not out) steadied the ship.

They compiled 65 before Ahmed was removed.

Mashinge was joined by Rob Williams and the pair added 105 before the latter was removed for a rapid 61 off 42 balls.

Chris Calcott (24) maintained support for Mashinge as Leamington closed on an imposing 264-5.

Halesowen made 58 for the first wicket in reply before Perry Derrick (3-48) forced Jamie Harris (34) to hit his own stumps.

Derrick then removed Kester Moseley (0) and added a third victim in former Netherlands international Alexei Kervezee.

Fellow spinner Nabeel Asghar (4-22) came to the fore, working his way through Halesowen’s middle order and removing opener Edward Kilbee (55).

The hosts then subsided from 137-5 to 167 all out.

Leamington entertain leaders Kidderminster on Saturday before making the trip to Bromsgrove on Bank Holiday Monday.
