BOXING: LEWIS Williams bowed out of the Elite Championships in Rotherham on Friday after failing to beat number three seed and eventual finalist Natty Ngwenya.

The Clearys boxer was competing in only his fourth senior contest and Ngwenya proved too much for Williams who was knocked out in the quarter-final stage of the competition.

“Lewis’s performance really did catch everyone’s eye,” said coach Edwin Cleary. “Dropping a split decision to Ngwenya who went on to lose himself on a split in the finals really proves Lewis is there.

“We and Lewis thought he’d won and was comfortable but this is boxing and a split is not really a loss.

“He’s only 18 and will go again. What Lewis needs now is experience as it was only his fourth senior contest.”

Williams will next be in action on Clearys’ home show at Trident College on May 20 where a whole host of talented boxers will be on show.
