Lottery grant set to boost Fitzpatrick's Boxing Gym's bright future

BOXING: A FIVE-figure National Lottery funding boost has been granted to Fitzpatrick’s Boxing Gym as the venue celebrates its third anniversary.

The funding has helped secure the gym, which is based at the Gurdwara near the Shires shopping park, and it is hoped new members will join the club as a result of the £10,000 grant.

It comes just months after star boxer Nick Leahy landed his first national senior title.

Delighted head coach Derek Fitzpatrick said the funding happened as a result of the gym’s work in the community outside of boxing.

He added: “The club is working at national level.

“In its short history, we have had five individuals box in four national semi-finals, two national finals and secured our first national champion in Nick (Leahy).

“None of this would’ve been possible without the continued support of the Sikh Community Centre and its committee.

“Together, the boxing club and community centre have done a lot of work.

“All at the boxing club wish to thank all at the centre for their help with helping to secure the Lottery grand to continue the club’s success.”
