New signing aiming to put a smile on faces at Leamington

NEW signing Kelsey Mooney says joining Leamington is the perfect way to get back playing with a smile on his face.

The 22-year-old striker, who has featured in most of the Brakes pre-season games, joins from Scunthorpe United but has been on Leamington boss Paul Holleran’s radar for a while.

Mooney began his career at Aston Villa, signing pro forms in February 2017, and made his League debut on loan with Cheltenham Town in September 2018, scoring his first goal a week later.

After leaving Villa, the youngster joined Hereford and earned a move back into the pro ranks with League Two Scunthorpe last summer.

“I really wanted to enjoy my football somewhere again after a frustrating year on a personal level, and after going back and forth with the gaffer I feel like this is a good opportunity to do that,” said Mooney. “

“My aim is to perform at the level I know I capable of and just looking at the manager’s history of moving strikers on that’s the aim whilst helping the club win football matches.”

Holleran, who has seen Colby Bishop, Josh March, and Courtney Baker-Richardson all go on to pro clubs, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to get this one over the line.

“Kelsey is well known to us and the area and after such a long spell at Aston Villa I really feel he has all the attributes to do well at Leamington and possibly kick on.

“We’re really looking forward to working with him and the early signs are very positive so we are hopeful that Kelsey will have an enjoyable and productive time with us.”

The Brakes had to settle for a second successive goalless draw after their friendly at Hednesford Town last Satuirday.

Brakes keeper Jake Weaver was the busier overall. He kept out efforts from Andre Brown and Jed Davies before Reece Styche was denied by a superb save with 16 minutes left.

Holleran’s side round off their preparations with a home game against Solihull Moors on Saturday before the National League North season kicks off on August 14.

* Racing Club Warwick ended their pre-season with a solid home win over Studley with both goals coming from Tyreece Ruddock.

The Racers begin their 2021/22 campaign on Saturday with an FA Cup clash versus Stone Old Alleynians, 3pm kickoff at Townsend Meadow.
