Old Leamingtonians get league campaign back on track with 41 nil win

RUGBY UNION: OLD LEAMINGTONIANS got their Midland 3 West (South) league campaign back on track with a thumping 41-0 win against Old Wheatleyans.

The home side took control of the game from kick off and produced a much-improved performance from seven days ago as Old Wheatleyans were put under heavy pressure in the opening minutes of the game.

It took OLs just five minutes to open the scoring when the ball was quickly fed out to winger Liam Wellings who crossed for his first of his two tries in the match.

Though the conversion was missed, OLs quickly added to their score soon after the try when back row Tom Smith drove through the disrupted defence to score a converted try – handing OLs a 12 point lead.

The game continued in the same vein as OLs dominated kept Old Wheats under pressure. And the pressure paid off with three more tries before the whistle blew for half time – Bradley James, Liam Wellings, and Tom Eales all touched down as OLs entered the break with a 29 point lead.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Old Leamingtonians dominating.

Time and time again, OLs’ forwards out-rucked and out drove the opposition to gain control – and it was only a combination of a slippery ball and some over anxious passing in the three-quarters that prevented a number of good scoring chances.

Bradley James added his second try following a 30 metre run while continued pressure allowed skipper Reece Jones to burst through Old Wheats’ defence to score the final try of the game.

Brad James converted as OLs won 41-0, securing a bonus point and moving to third in the league in doing so.

OLs are next in action on Saturday, October 14, against Rugby St Andrews.
