Racing stop high-flying Atherstone in 'six pointer' win

Leamington Editorial 9th Jan, 2018   0

FOOTBALL: RACING Club Warwick continued to influence the top of the Midland Football League Division One after beating promotion hopefuls Atherstone 1-0 at home.

The result leaves Racing ten points short of table topping Walsall Wood with two games in hand.

Racing started the game brightly as Luke Cole saw his overhead kick just miss the target before Jack Taylor’s low cross was missed by a stretched Cole at the back post.

O’Grady then whipped in a delightful ball to the advancing Passey, whose low volley was saved by the Adder’s keeper with the resulting scramble seeing Cole fire wide.

The pitch soon started to resemble a bog as heavy rain made under foot conditions troublesome.

Atherstone had their first chance on goal when Gould cut in from the right, but his shot went wide.

Racing started the second half as they ended the first. Slevin saw a shot edge wide before Atherstone went close to scoring when Tom Cross was forced to make a strong save from Miller’s effort.

Jack Taylor then made a goal line clearance to keep the game level.

Adders’ relentless pressure tested Coleman and Hutchcox in defence as Racing weathered the storm.

Though Warwick’s chances were limited, they looked dangerous on the break.

A superb back heel from O’Grady created a chance for Taylor, his arrowed through ball fell nicely to the advancing Kavanagh whose first time strike was fired high into the net past the Adder’s stopper.

Atherstone threw more at Racing to open up the game.

An O’Grady through ball saw Kavangh just offside before Adder’s Gray jinked inside but his shot went wide.

Atherstone were laying siege now and a superb through ball from the Haynes put Thomson in, but a heavy touch went straight to a grateful Tom Cross.
