Rare slip up for Old Leamingtonians Ladies

RUGBY UNION: OLD Leamingtonians Ladies first team slipped to only their second defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 38-27 to Bletchley.

Restricted to only 16 players, OLs started the contest well as second row Charlie Stephens stole the ball from Bletchley during a ruck to power through a stunned defence.

Scrum half Ffion Davies-Cale added two points with the conversion.

Unhappy about being caught off guard, Bletchley used their backs to evade OLs’ defence and record their first try of the match.

Captain Jen Vermeulen took advantage of a penalty awarded to OLs. She took a quick tap to shoot through an unprepared Bletchley to score OLs second try of the match. Davies-Cale brought in another successful conversion.

After a long battle of back and fourths with both teams showing impressive skill and fierce attacks, Bletchley eventually managed to bring in the final try of the first half. The try ensured Bletchley trailed by two points at the end of the opening half, OLs leading 14-12.

The beginning of the second half saw Bletchley score an early try after a strong wave of attacks from their forwards.

Soon after, Bletchley’s back line got lucky as their No.12 intercepted the ball and was met with a clear run to the try line for Bletchley’s second try of the second half.

Leah Heath broke Bletchley’s scoring streak with OLs’ third try of the match after a quick tap penalty.

Davies-Cale showed her skills at converting with another successful kick to bring in the precious extra points.

Another two tries from Bletchley put the result beyond doubt though with the final score standing at 38-27 to Bletchley.
