Rookies shine on Nuneaton bill

FLEDGLING Fitzpatrick’s boxers Leah Gunton and Simon Huruska secured unanimous victories thanks to highly impressive performances at the Co-op Sports Club in Nuneaton on Saturday.

It was only Gunton’s second bout and Huruska’s debut but both were triumphant against Border City ABC’s Gabby Hodgson and Mason Nunn respectively.

The visiting fighters had both made the long drive down from the Carlisle club and Gunton was first up, with her busy style proving a handful for Hodgson.

“This was a nice bout from both girls,” said coach Babs Kandola.

“Leah was undoubtedly the winner but Gabby can take many positives away from her debut.”

Huruska was next up and received a warm reception to the competitive ring for his debut against an attacking and durable Nunn.

Kandola said: “Simon would have learned more in these three rounds than he would have done in three months in the gym.

“Mason was an ideal first opponent and played his part in this competitive match but Simon came away a deserved unanimous winner.”

The fact Border City were willing to travel so far proved their confidence in their boxers, but this proved to be Fitzpatrick’s’ day.

The busy schedule continues for the Leamington club with Sean Leahy boxing in Willenhall on Saturday.
