RUGBY UNION - Claverdon wrap up title with 18th successive victory

CLAVERDON RFC claimed the Midlands 4 West (South) league title after thrashing second placed Old Wheatleyans 40-21 to chalk up their 18th successive victory.

Tom Bicknell, James Williams, Charlie Byrd, Charlie Wakelam and Hilton Garner-Jones all crossed for tries with Chris Calcott ever-reliable from the kicking tee at Ossetts Hole Lane.

Claverdon have won all 18 of their league matches this season and now have an unassailable lead at the top of the table with two matches left to play.

In front of a large crowd, Claverdon struck early when Calcott broke the line before releasing Bicknell who showed good strength to ride a tackle and score in the corner with the former converting well from the touchline.

And despite Old Wheatleyans enjoying long periods of territory in the Claverdon half, a last-ditch tackle from Garner-Jones kept the visitors at bay before Calcott kicked a penalty to extend the home side’s lead.

The Lions scored a crucial try on the stroke of half time when Williams collected a loose ball before scoring under the posts after Calcott’s cross-field kick was fumbled by the Wheats winger.

And the hosts appeared to have secured the points early in the second half when Byrd cantered over for a try after Williams broke the line.

However, the visitors came roaring back with three quickfire tries, the second of which saw the Wheats full-back score from a delightful chip and chase.

Claverdon regained their composure to finish the game off in style as Wakelam capitalised on a loose lineout to steal the ball and power over before Garner-Jones finished a slick move in the corner after great hands from Josh Evans.

The Lions are next in action away at Upton-on-Severn on Saturday, April 16 with kick-off at 3pm at Banwell Park.
