KENILWORTH Rugby Club marked their centenary season with a walk from the location of the club’s inaugural match to their current Glasshouse Lane home.
The club celebrated 100 years of sporting heritage and community involvement prior to their first home game of the 2024/25 season.
Kenilworth’s first-ever match took place at the War Memorial Park in Coventry against Warwickshire Yeomanry – 100 years ago – in 1924.
Upon completion of the walk, members and guests enjoyed a celebratory lunch before their Regional 1 Midlands clash against Bromsgrove.
Kenilworth’s deputy mayor, Coun James Kennedy, and deputy mayoress Kit Lawry, joined the group on the walk.
Club president Rich Bennett offered words of welcome as the group completed a gentle five-mile trek to the Jack Davies Memorial Ground at Glasshouse Lane in just under a couple of hours.
Guests and clubmates exchanged stories ahead of the men’s first team fixture against Bromsgrove which ended in an 81-7 defeat.
The men’s first and second teams played matches at Kenilworth while the women’s side travelled to Newcastle upon Tyne for their fixture.
Kenilworth’s minis and juniors section also hosted a mini rugby tournament for under-10 boys and girls as 10 teams took part.
Bennett said: “Thank you to all those who have taken part in the weekend’s events, be that the Centenary Walk, representative fixtures or as part of the Minis and Juniors U10 tournament for boys and girls, highlighting what a pleasure it is to experience the club’s rich history both past and present, and witness such an inclusive approach as a community sports club.”
