RUGBY UNION - Leamington RFC take losing bonus point from Berkswell clash

Leamington Editorial 7th Mar, 2022   0

LEAMINGTON RFC were forced to settle for a losing bonus point after they were beaten 12-5 by Berkswell and Balsall in a low scoring affair.

Ed Gray scored Leamington’s only try in the first half as the visitors pushed their fourth-placed opponents all the way.

The result leaves Leamington in ninth place in the Midlands 2 West (South) table, having now lost their last three league matches.

And it was the visitors who dominated the opening exchanges, earning a number of penalties, with full back Sam Nunn keeping the home side pinned in their own 22-metre zone.

Leamington were made to pay for failing to convert pressure into points when Berkswell raced away to score the game’s first try.

However, the visitors quickly drew level when Gray finished off a drive in the corner after impressive number 8 Ali Weddon was held up.

Berkswell scored the game clinching converted try early in the second period but Leamington refused to lie down with returning prop Mark Warrilow dominating the set piece.

Elsewhere, Craig Smith and Ed Gray were commanding the lineout and wing Conor Chamberlain began to tease the opposition with some mesmeric running.

And Leamington thought they had their second try when Louis Harvey jinked his way through the Berkswell defence before racing in to score only to see his effort disallowed after straying into touch.

The game was played almost exclusively in the home side’s 22-metre zone for the final few minutes but Leamington were unable to break through.

Leamington are next in action at home to Earlsdon on Saturday, March 12 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Moorefields.
