OLD Leamingtonians Colts won the under-18’s Bob Coward Cup with an impressive 29-12 victory against Broadstreet in the final.

Ollie Farquharson crossed twice while Charlie Bartlett and Patrick Errington both touched down with Lucas Howell adding nine points from the kicking tee at the Ivor Preece Field.

The victory completes a league and cup double for the Colts who have already won the Merit League this season.

OL’s made the most of a well-timed penalty to take the lead as Farquharson scored the game’s first try in the corner and Howell converted superbly from the touchline.

And the visitors struck again soon after as captain Bartlett finished off a fine move following a fine break from George Pelter as Howell added the extras.

Broadstreet responded with a length-of-the-field interception try after the break before another score cut the deficit to just two points.

However, OL’s extended their lead when Howell kicked a penalty before Farquharson dotted down his second try of the game out wide.

And Errington crossed for the game’s final try to secure the cup for Old Leamingtonians

OL’s Colts team manager, Tim Perkins, said: “Broadstreet should be incredibly proud of the way they performed, but ultimately the commitment of OL’s team to stick to the task and their ability to react and create opportunity to play stood out on the night.

“The way the whole Old Leamingtonians squad, with support from coaches, physio and supporting friends and family played the game with intent, they did the club proud, and they rightly celebrated well into the night.”

OL’s director of men’s rugby, Scott Craig, added: “The Colts win over Broadstreet in the Warwickshire Cup final demonstrates the continued development of youth rugby at Old Leamingtonians.

“The Colts win is the third time OL’s have lifted the cup in five seasons of rugby previously won in 2018 and 2019 and then the impact of Covid.

“It is fantastic for OL’s rugby across the board and particularly pleasing to see the exciting manner in which the Colts team won the final.

“They made us very proud of the fast exciting structured play that they displayed in winning the game and particularly taking control from the early stages of the game.

“I have seen the confidence of the team develop, the players have shown an eagerness to get involved with the men’s senior section on training and this strength and development has built through and they really did win the final based on their own strength, confidence and game plan execution.

“The support from the coaching team of the Colts was also demonstration of how important youth rugby is at OL’s and how important we see this Colts section as a pathway through to men’s senior rugby.

“Hopefully, this provides the young Colts players with awesome memories of the cup final win but also the development of character for the players in setting their goals and being confident to go achieve.

“Thanks to the Colts players who showed confidence, grit and determination along with executing entertaining rugby and representing themselves and the club in the best possible way.”
