Spa Striders return in style

SPA Striders ended a four-year absence at the Midlands Road Relay Championships at Sutton Park on Saturday.

In highly competitive fields the ladies’ A team (Jo Fleming, Susan Cox, Katherine Lambeth and Clare Hinton) finished 34th out of 104 teams and the men’s A team (Chris McKeown, Gethyn Friswell, Rob Egan, Simon Ludford, Dan Fleming and Dave Mills) finished 58th out of 105 teams.

The other ladies teams finished in 78th, 82nd and 86th respectively.

The men’s B team finished in 92nd.




On Sunday, a Strider contingent travelled to Draycote Water.

In the ten-mile race, Chris McKeown (58:03) finished in second place with a four-minute PB, breaking the 10m club record in the process.


Chris Wilson (66:16) also recorded a PB of six minutes, finishing in eighth, and was followed by Mike Pugh (71:03), Rosie Banks (76:04), Frances Parkes (89:13), James Robbins (90:53) and Helen Pugh (94:32).

Adam Notley used the 20-mile race as preparation for the Amsterdam Marathon on October 21, finishing in sixth place in 2:14:34.

He was closely followed by Simon Ludford (2:18:26 – ninth), Chris Liddle (2:18:39 – tenth).

Bethan Gwynn was first Strider female back in a PB of 2:45:31 to finish in sixth place overall.

She was closely followed by Dawn Clark (2:46:12 – seventh).

Kat Lambeth (2:48:34), Billy Morton (2:56:11), Rob Egan (2:59:31), Peter Schofield (3:03:04), Abi Morton (3:29:33), Ellen Powell (3:50:23) and Natalie Dellar (3:50:23) completed the Strider contingent.

Jo and Dan Fleming ran the Brewood 10k.

Jo was third lady in 43:35 and Dan achieved a new PB of 38:35.

Mel Venables completed the Humanity Tring Ultra, finishing in 5.09.27.

She was first in the V40 category and third female overall.

In the Bristol Half Marathon, John Blackmore finished with a sub-90 time and an eight-minute PB in 1:29:56, followed by Emma Bird (1:51:33), Jude Baum (1:52:02), Sandra Stokes (1:54:54) and Annie Bryan (2:02:41).

Ash Hogg took on the absolutely stunning Causeway Coast Marathon in Northern Ireland, finishing in 6:38:18.

Elsewhere, Tim Beresford competed in the Hercules Festival of Sport Sprint Duathlon in St Albans and came fifth overall, clocking 1:05:25.
