SWIMMING: YOUNGSTERS at Leamington Spa Swimming Club enjoyed a successful weekend in Nuneaton at the County Qualifiers.
Organised by the Leicester Sharks club, the gala took place on Saturday, December 16, and Sunday – with many youngsters eyeing a spot to represent their region in the future.
Saturday started with Girls’ 100m Individual Medley (IM) where 14-year-olds Laura Griffiths, Abigail Boff and Amalia Midtsaeter took the top three places.
Teigan Parker added to the medal haul taking first place in the 15 and over age group.
The 14-year-old girls continued to dominate for Leamington taking the top three in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke with two golds for Lissie Burbidge and one for Boff.
Further backstroke success for Leamington came with the 12-year-old boys, who took the top three places over 200m with Jason Herbert leading the field with a well deserved first place.
Standout performances came from Lily O’Brien, who scooped gold in the 15 years and over 200m butterfly and nine-year-old Andre Onyekwe won the 100m freestyle – setting a new club record.
Sunday morning opened with the Girls’ 100m breaststroke, where Amelia Wiggin impressively took gold for Leamington in the 11-year-old age group in a field of 17 swimmers.
Leamington excelled with the Girls 200m IM taking gold in the 13 and 14 age categories and all three top places in the 15 and over.
The final session of the weekend started with the Boys’ 200m freestyle, where Leamington took the top three places in the 12 year age group with less than two seconds separating them.
Maddison Nuttall won most golds on the day with an outstanding four first places.
Overall it was a successful weekend for the club with 37 swimmers taking home over 130 medals including 48 golds of which Griffiths and Herbert won an impressive five each.
